PrefaceA number of persons have been of great help to me during my work with this book. The Director General of Museums and Antiquities in Denmark, Professor P. V. Glob, and the Professor of Penal Law at the University of Copenhagen, Knud Waaben, both gave me most willingly the benefit of their expertise. They supplied me with useful information, and checked the material I had collected, putting in considerable time and effort, and showing the greatest interest. I would hardly have dared to publish the chapters in question without their invaluable help. In addition. Professor Glob kindly gave me permission to include in this book a number of photographs taken by him.The Keeper of Prints and Drawings at The Royal Museum of Fine Arts, Copenhagen, Erik Fischer, M.A., Henrik Neiiendam, M.A., and Ole J. Rafaelsen, M.D., checked over the whole manuscript and Professor Mogens Westergaard over a part of it. As a result of the thoroughness of these friends of mine I received a great mmiber of valuable critical suggestions. My son, Jens Henrik Vanggaard, M.A., followed my work in a similar way. In particular he carefully checked the translations from the Greek and Latin to ensure their accuracy.Miss Jola Hemmes was responsible for all the secretarial work. It is difficult to fmd words to convey my appreciation of the skill, care, and effort she devoted to my work.Mrs Grace Goldin of Yale went over part of my translation, and Mrs Barbara Sullivan in London over the whole of it, correcting it most carefully. I am deeply indebted to them both. To all I offer my best thanks.
