-L he terms «blue period» and «rose period», the standard designation for Picasso s work from 1901 to 1904, and from 1905 to 1906, are clearly insufficient to encompass the salient characteristics of that work m terms of essentially pictorial understanding. It is as if the Picassian excgctcs had plucked out the terms in the greatest haste and, in order to define the said periods, had fastened only npon their most ptirely objective characteristics, their most exterior and most immediately perceived visual aspects.
In a limited sense, however, we can acccpt the proposition that these shorthand terms, completely insufficient as they arc on the conceptual plane for consideration of the works as art, at least serve well enough to classify the works chronologically, and to indicate that which superficially distinguishes them from those preceding and those following.
