This book traces the development of steam as I have seen it on my travels round the world during the past 50 years, and concentrates particularly on the magnificence of the working systems of steam railways and on the great engines still to be found in running order. Modem diesels and electrics are included, but it was during the first 40 years of this century that the development and running of steam locomotives reached its height and it is this period that holds most fascination for train-lovers. Many trains designed at this time are still in regular use in European countries and have been photographed against some of the most magnificent scenery in the world. The railways of the United States, Australia, Japan, South Africa and India have provided me with equally interesting experiences and have yielded the spectacular photographic material included here.
