As men learnt to use tools, they improved upon these natural shelters. Huts were made from mud and straw. A further development were houses made from stone and sun-dried brick by the Bronze Age people in Babylonia and Egypt. Greeks covered their walls with stucco, a kind of piaster. The Romans, who were expert builders, constructed luxurious villas with brick walls, mosaic floors and tiled roofs. They even had lead plumbing, under-floor heating and sometimes glass windows. The castles of the Middle Ages were massive structures built for protection against attack. But when times grew more peaceful, merchants lived in tall houses close together in narrow streets. Gradually men realised that houses could be beautiful as well as protective shells. Howevera great variety of homes exist throughout the world, depending upon the money and materials available and the kind of weather that the house has to withstand.
