PIRATE PICTURES In memóriám Gertrude Stein A rose is a rose is a rose A pirate is a pirate is a pirate. Only his actual embodiment has changed. The living person no longer exists, but is only to be found in pictures - those painted and those filmed. The glory, intermeshed with a sense of tingling horror, still surrounds them — the pirates who nearly changed the course of world history: the "Arch Pirate" Captain John Avery, who did not shy from robbing the ship of the Great Mogul of his goods and his daughter; or Bartholomew Roberts, who is reported to have captured more than 400 ships, and who was possibly a woman. And Blackbeard, Captain Misson, Captain Kidd, and Stortebecker from the far north. All of them robbed, plundered, and killed. Criminals? Adventurers? In each case they belonged to the outsiders of society, to those who sought freedom at any price. Even if they had to pay for it with their own death. Luciano composed a pirate story and had it filmed. He went of to the Philippines and let the exotic surroundings of nature inspire him to create his story, which has much to do with himself and the conceptions of his own art work. Roll playing and the wearing of masks and costumes have constituted an integral part of his work from the very onset : from the roll of the travestite to the Indian games with Rainer Petting. This time, too, he worked with the media he deems most directly appropriate: film and painting. Inspired by the luxuriance of nature, by the almost dramatic color play of sunrise and sunset, he began to make up people who would fit well in this exotic world. He invented pirates. He shot a pirate film with himself and his girlfriend. He transformed the filmed pictures into painted ones. He used readily available materials: palm leaves, coconuts, remains of rotted wooden ships. Out of this he built a paradise which would become adventurous background scenery for his pirates. He invented picture stories which unwound to form a plot, at the same time establishing themselves as separate individual scenes. Thus arose the series of "Pirate Pictures", most of which were painted in Berlin, born through the encounter with the strange continent and the magical lure of far-away pirate adventure. Bold are the colors, gesticulating are the expressions which the silhouette shapes incorporate. A pirate needs dynamic forces. Bravery. Adventure must still be perceptible. The compositions were developed with vigor and an agile facility in the use of drawing and color, a distinctive quality in the work of Luciano Castelli. It vibrates and trembles a little with excitement No Indians. Simply pirates. Because a pirate is a pirate is a pirate.
