Preface to the 4l8t Edition
The Pocket Dictionary has been subjected to a thorough revision, and care has been taken, in preparing this edition, to bring it up to date, by including, especiidly, terms recently coined. It is to bfe hoped that the book, in its new form, will be as successful as previous editions were, in fulfilling the demands made on it by its users. W. Ebisch.
Preface to the 39th Edition
In the present edition, the Pocket Dictionary has been completely remodelled and reset. Both parts have been carefully revised and considerably improved. By eliminating !antiquated expressions room has been found for the inclusion of important new colloquialisms, commercial and technical expressions and words connected with the various branches of sport. The latest and best English lexicographical works haye been utilized to advantage.
Special attention has been paid to the phonetic transcription and the old method employed in the previous editions has been abandoned in favour of a new one, based in the main on the well-known system of Arnold Schrfier, but deviating from the latter in the use of a few symbols, which, in the opinion of the author are better calculated to fulfil the purposes for which this book is intended. The latest (1925) edition of Duden has been followed as being the standard work on the orthography of the German language.
In conclusion, I feel it to be my duty to express my very best thanks to Dr. Michael O'Brien, English Reader at the University of Leipzig, who very kindly undertook the arduous work of proof-reading thereby contributing materially to the completion of the work. W. Ebisch.
