Flying Bombs and Rockét Missiles
The war was still raging with full fury and the Nazi adversary did not at all intend to surrender. Fierce battles were fought on all European fronts, from the vast territories of the USSR to Italy and in northern Francé, where the Allies recently landed in iNormandy. Blood was being shed, thousands upon thousands of soldiers of various nationalities were getting killed.
The enemy resisted with fanatical stubbornness. The Germans were now unable to launch any deci-sive offensive. On the contrary, they were constantly suffering set-backs and major defeats, but they still trusted their "Invincible and Infallible" Führer. The Germán people, especially the younger generation educated under the Nazi regime, were convinced that the last word would belong to Hitler, and that the continuo'us retreats cunningly referred to as "shorten-ing of the front" in official oommuniqués, would pro ve to be nothing more than passing mishaps.
Their belief was to somé extent justified by bril-liant and lightning major victories in the first phase of the war. Poland, Norway, Belgium, Holland, Den-mark, Francé, Greece and Yugoslavia, "Blitzkrieg" in the Soviet Union, iNorth Africa But these were followed by the Stalingrad battle and continuous withdrawal on the Eastern Front, disastrous repulse in Tunisia, Sicily and Italy, Normandy landings
