ForewordThe third edition of Politics in Francé reflects once again Henry Ehrmann's profound and subtle understanding of French culture, politics, and history, informed by the insights and findings of the modern social sciences.During the five years which have elapsed since the publica-tion of the second edition there has been a substantial im-provement in the quantity and quality of research on French politics, and much has changed in political life. The revisions in the third edition take advantage of our increased knowl-edge of French politics to report and interpret the changes in French political culture, electoral patterns, the character-istics of the party system, and the operations of the govern-mental agencies. The performance of the French political system particularly as it relates to economic growth and social equity receives a thoughtful analysis and evaluation.Although Ehrmann is cautious in his speculation about the future, he writes with insight and clarity about the issues that animate contemporary French politics and the prospects of the "two uneasy coalitions" confronting each other in the political aréna.Gábriel A.
