Welcome to Pop Up now Pop Up now is a series of six books especially designed for students of primary school levels. It takes students from beginner level to pre-intermediate level or levels A1 and A2 of the Common European Framework, while carefully considering students' particular needs and interests at each stage. Tried and tested methods in EFL teaching are the foundations of all the six books. A building block strategy has been employed, through which every lexical and grammatical item is carefully presented and systematically revised in the course of the year. Each Pop Up now book has been designed to be completed in one school year. It is based on a wellorganised, multidimensional syllabus, which focuses equally on the development of both vocabulary and structures through lively topics and communicative activities. It alsó integrates the curriculum taught throughout the Primary School levels. The four skills (reading, listening, speaking and writing) are developed in an integrated way throughout the course. Course Components Studenfs Book Each book consists of 12 units with 8 lessons each. All 8 lessons in every unit are thematically linked and lead to the exploration and discovery of the functions of the language related to the theme of the unit. Each unit includes a wide rangé of drawings and photos, songs and chants which stress the communicative function of the language and motivate learners to participate actively. Each lesson is designed to be completed in one teaching hour. Workbook The Workbook includes supplementary practice of the structures and the vocabulary presented in each lesson. Each lesson should be dealt with in class, during a separate teaching hour. The Workbook is considered an important component of the course through which all skills are practised extensively. A wide variety of tasks, board games and listening activities provide ample practice of communication skills. Teacher's Book The Teacher's Book provides a step-by-step guide to teaching each lesson. There are no hard and fast rules and teachers should display their own individual creative style in teaching. However, when pressed for time as most teachers are, it may be reassuring to have a lesson outline with extra ideas handy for easy reference. The main stages of each lesson are as follows: Revision: It is suggested that a few minutes are devoted to somé revision at the beginning of each lesson. This may take the form of a brief game or roleplay, brainstorming or revision of a song. Warm up: The main objective of this stage is the introduction of new structures and vocabulary in order to facilitate students in the next stage. The teacher introduces the structure or the vocabulary in English and encourages individual students to produce sentences including the new item, by simulating, miming or performing. We advise teachers to avoid the use of the mother tongue (L1) when doing warm up activities and use it only as a last resort, because these activities can help learners develop cognitive skills and start thinking in English. Presentation: The objective of this stage is to present the structures and vocabulary, in an interesting context. Short picture strips, with alternating characters are presented, and usually involve something interesting or funny to motivate and raise interest. From time to time songs or chants replace the picture strips for variety in the lessons. We advise teachers to begin this stage by focusing on the pictures and asking students to guess or predict the situation or the topic of the story that is to follow. Prediction is an important strategy in developing reading skills and can easily be introduced from the early stages. Practice: This section consists of one or two interesting activities through which the use of newly taught structures and vocabulary will come as naturally as possible. Students work in pairs or groups and the tasks are designed so as to ensure that both students in a pair, or all students in a group, have equal opportunity to practise the language. Before Leaving: A short task is suggested for the end of the lesson and only appears in the Teacher's Book. This aims at reinforcing the new vocabulary or structures taught. Optional: Optional activities appear in the Teacher's Book only, aiming at both making the lesson more enjoyable and giving further practice. All activities are communicative and aim at enabling students to use the target language in order to complete a task. Workbook Key: This section includes explanations and tips for the teacher. A key is alsó included.
