PREFACE
This book on power system protection is the outcome of teaching and research experiences of the authors for the last fifteen years in the Electrical Engineering Department of Jadavpur University, Calcutta. Throughout the main text all endeavours have been made to explain the performances of different types of relays, so far developed with the help of a generalised and comprehensive theory. At different stages of relay development the treatment has been done in a discrete way such that each of them appears to be a novel device by itself. This generalised treatment will help the readers to dispel that sort of concept and reveal the basic theory behind the development of all relays in general.
The authors have tried to compile together the classical techniques of electromechanical relays and the modern development of static relays together with the new emerging technique of digital relaying. The authors have also shown the limitations of electro-mechanical relays in their practical applications and how the static relaying devices can expand the flexibility of their applications in solving the various recent problems of power system protection. In this context, the discussions on Relay testing methods and equipment is also of special significance.
The book covers the syllabi of both undergraduate and postgraduate courses of most of the Indian Universities. It may also be of considerable help for the research workers in the field of protection as also for the persons engaged in relay manufacture, design, testing and utilisation. The authors will feel amply rewarded if the readers find this book useful either for their course work, teaching or application purposes. Any constructive suggestion for improvement will be gratefully accepted.
The authors express their sincere gratitude to Sri C. N. Mitra for typing the manuscript and Sri U. N. Choudhury for drawing all the diagrams in the text and to those who have helped them some way or other in preparing the manuscript of this book. We are grateful to the National Book Trust, Govt, of India for subsidising the price of this book.
