IntroductionThis book has been written to help the elementary student to write acceptable and compréhensible business letters in English, and to understand letters he receives, which will be written in ordinary, colloquial English. We are assuming that the reader will be living abroad and that he needs to write to English people in his line of business; the book can also be used for students on short courses in this country. The structures he is to use are kept within an upper elementary level (as far as possible they are those which are included within the first book of a three-book course or the first book and a half of a four-book course) and the vocabulary is kept as simple as possible except for business terms, which the student will have to understand if not to use; difficult words or words used with a special commercial meaning are marked with an asterisk in the text the first time they appear, and explained in the Glos-sary at the end of the book. Since the student will have to understand letters written in ordinary English, more difficult than he can use himself, we have introduced the most common terms and structures deliberately, even though he is at a fairly elementary level.The choice of items for inclusion in this book is based on what the student needs for communication with English firms. It owes much to the notional approach, now becoming well established in English Language Teaching. It is intended to be a book which will enable the student to adapt his knowledge of the English language to his need to write and understand the English used in business.
