PREFACE TO THE SECOND EDITION
As Stated in the Preface to the First Edition, this entire work has been planned on the basis of the fact that one cannot really understand the application of heat to power plant work unless one is familiar with the basic fundamentals of the subject. Hence, the first fourteen divisions of this book have been devoted to the theory of heat, presented by the author in simple language and without the use of complicated mathematics. Since the theory of heat as covered in this book has not changed, little revision has been necessary in this part of the book. The remainder of the book deals with the. application of these fundamentals to power plants. The art of power plant design has advanced materially since the author's original work; hence these latter divisions needed revising. Mr. Croft was unable to undertake this work and I have been authorized-ib do it for him.
In revising this book I have endeavored to maintain the author's style and simplicity of language and presentation.
