Using this book
1
Use this book to find out about and practise grammatical points that are
causing you problems in your written or spoken German. You can work
through it in sequence, or look up spécifié points as required.
• Use the Index at the back of the book to find out where a particular point is explained and practised.
• For each unit, study the dialogue at the start to find out how the grammatical structures covered are used in context. Use a dictionary to look up essential vocabulary. The phrases underlined are explained and in most cases translated later in the unit.
• Read the explanation of the grammar rules in English and make sure you fully understand them.
• Learn by heart the German examples of each structure.
• Test your understanding by doing the exercises linked to each section. Write out the whole sentence or passage rather than just the word or phrase asked for.
• Check your answers with the correct version at the back of the book (pages 185-214). Pay particular attention to any you got wrong; re-read the rules to see why you got them wrong, and if you still cannot understand why, consult your teacher.
• Most of the exercises are based on a limited vocabulary related to the dialogues. A few, however, are deliberately more wide-ranging to add interest.
• Only learning by heart and frequent consolidation will enable you to fully master German grammatical structures so that you can use them confidently in your own written and spoken German.
• As you read more German, you will become aware of variations in style which may diverge from some of the grammar 'rules'. Make a note of these, and discuss them with your teacher.
