Editor's note The present Special Issue originated in teamwork among social workers, linguists and discourse analysts over the past 10-12 years, culminating in a series of projects and conferences financed by several of the official French agencies in the domain of child protection, in particular the 2008 Colloque ADDS ('Analyse de discours et demande sociale:enjeux théoriques et méthodologiques', Paris, 27-29 nov), co-organiszed by Georgeta Cislaru, Frédéric Pugniére-Saavedra, Frédérique Sitri, and Marié Veniard. A special mention should be made of Laurent Filliettaz, who read, and commented on, the first draft of the discussion that forms the body of the introduction.
