PREFACE This Course is designed for teachers who are looking for a class-book which will ease their task of lesson-planning and at the same time enable their students to make rapid progress in understanding, speaking, reading and writing everyday English. The plán of Book Two follows closely on that of Book One. Each Lesson begins with a reading passage dealing with the daily lives of the Brown family and their friends. A piece of conversation follows, so thai simiiar material is treated colloquially and more formally in the same lesson. Next come sentence-pattern drills iliustrating pomts of grammar and usage, arranged to a carefully graded scheme, with explanatory notes added where necessary. The Lesson ends with a list of new words and idioms, and a pientiíui coílection of exereises based on the material of that and earlier Lessons. To extend the yoo-word vocabulary cf Book One a further 600 words are here introduced, only about 40 of which are not in the General Service List of English Words. Phonetic transeripts are given for all new words and idioms as they occur in the Lessons, and again in the generál vocabulary at the end. There is a reference index to the exereises, and a list of the sentence pattems showing the structure or teaching item covered in each. Once again the illustrations not only enliven the text but alsó provide further materisii for classroom exereises. Teaching English as a foreign language is a highly skilled art, particularly when rapid results are looked for. It is hoped that this Course, based on much practical experience, will make the task easier for the teacher and the learning process more enjoyable for the studeiit. E. F. C.
