Kintaro, the Golden BoyOf all the heroes of old Japan, the most famous was Kintaro. He was the strongest and the bravest of all the warriors.Kintaro was the son of a warrior, but his father died before he was born. He lived with his mother, high up in the forest on the steep slope of a mountain. His mother was very proud of her fme strong baby. She called him Kintaro - or the Golden Boy.As Kintaro grew up he became stronger and stronger. By the time he was eight years old he could cut down trees as quickly as any woodcutter. He often went into the forest with a large axe, given to him by his mother, and helped the woodcutters to cut down trees.Kintaro and his mother lived in a very lonely part of the forest. There was no village near, and the only people they ever saw were the woodcutters. Kintaro, however, was not lonely. Because he had no other children to play with, he made friends with the animals. He often played with them, and soon he learnt how to talk to them. The animals loved and respected Kintaro because he was stronger and cleverer than any of them. His best friends were the bear, the deer, the monkey and the hare. They had great fun playing together.One day, while they were walking along the steep side of slope lonely respect(ed) bear monkey
