The Hungarian Conquest
Medieval chronicles named the region between the Middle Volga Region and the Ural Mountains Magna Hungaria where the Dominican friar lulianus found in the thirteenth century the Magyar tribes who remained in the East. However, the majority of the population moved to the Volga - Don - Donets region in the eighth century. This territory was later called Levedia after the name of their first duke. Around 850 they moved further to the region between the Dniepr and the Dniester: the Byzantine Emperor mentioned this territory under the name of "Etelköz" which means "between the rivers". The Magyar troupes visited several times the Carpathian Basin which they occupied finally between 895 and 902 under the leadership of Prince Árpád. actions, while they were usually invited by rulers and landgraves being in conflict with each other, for to intervene on the side of one of the parties. Beside of capture these raids served to secure their borders against eventual conquerors in order to save time for the development of their state. After fierce campaigns to the West of Europe ended, i.e. after 955 the new Prince, Taksony (955-972) strengthened the princely power and prepared the fundaments for the state-building initiatives of Grand Prince Géza (972-996) and King Stephen I (the Saint), the first Hungarian King (997/1000-1038).
