INTRODUCTION
Bounded by the mountains and the sea, the Principality of Monaco has become, over the years, a focus of attraction and a popular resort for tourists, well-known the world over. With a resident population of around 30,000, of which 4,500 are natives of the Principality, this tiny sovereign state welcomes thousands of visitors each year.
The Principality of Monaco is made up of; the Rocher, or Rock, which overlooks the port and on which the Prince's Palace stands; and the Con-damine, Moneghetti, Monte-Carlo (containing the Casino) and Tenao districts,
as well as the new Larvotto and Font-vieille districts, recently built-up on land reclaimed from the sea. In 1989, the Principality celebrated with great enthusiasm the 40th anniversary of the reign of H.S.H. Prince Rainier III, father of Their Serene Highnesses Princesses Caroline and Stephanie and H.S.H. Prince Albert, his future successor. Throughout his reign. Prince Rainier has skillfully combined economic and cultural development and the growth of the tourist trade of Monaco with a great respect for the traditions which have allowed the country to remain independent for 500 years.
