PREFACEThe second International Restorer Seminar was arrangedbetween 15-27 July, 1978, by the Institute of Conservationand Methodology of Museums in cooperation with the Society ofthe Dissemination of Scientific Knowledge of County Veszprem,as Section B of the Balaton Summer University. In our judgementit proved to be the must successful among the ones, havingbeen organized so far. More participants from abroad and fromHungary were present as before and the high level of the lec-tures, the well organized arrangement of the various programswere highly appreciated.The subject entitled "Problems of the Completion of ArtObjects" was already fixed up in 19 76. This topic, containingnumerous aspects, many theoretical and practical questions,has been discussed rather thoroughly even if it could not havebeen entirely exhausted. Encouraging and very promising isthe fact that the participating competent personalities valuedthe objectives of the Seminar, thus a "Veszprem Charter" cameinto question, summarizing the conventions of the protectionof art objects in a similar way as the "Venice Charter" didit, concerning the care of monuments.The program was rather jampacked, all the lectures wereconcentrated to five days. The majority of them were illu-strated with slides. /In the annex we reproduced those photo-graphs that were posted to us by the lecturers./ The main sub-jects were as follows: the philosophy and ethics of conser-vation; the problems concerning stone conservation; restora-tion and completion of easel paintings, murals, polychromewooden sculptures and archaeological metal objects. As thelectures and procedures acquainted gave rise to animated de-bates, the last morning five sections were formed for thediscussions held at the seat of the Veszprem Committee of the
