FOREWORD The 7th International Workshop on Cellular Neural Networks and their Applications (CNNA 2002) has been organized by the Institute of Applied Physics, department of Physics of the Johann Wolfgang Goethe-University Frankfurt/Main. The workshop was sponsored by the Johann Wolfgang Goethe-University and the Circuit and Systems Society (CASS) of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) Inc. Co-sponsors were the German National Science Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft), the Office of Naval Research International Field Office (ONRIFO) and the USAF European Office of Aerospace Research and Development (EOARD). This workshop followed a biennial series of six workshops consecutively hosted in Budapest (1990), Munich (1992), Rome (1994), Seville (1996), London (1998), and Catania (2000). The conferences proved to be successful in bringing together specialists from very different areas and in providing a bridge linking theorists and applied scientists. The subtitle "Nonlinear Information Processing and Intelligent Sensors" of this conference underlines that Cellular Neural Network (CNN) technology will play an important role in the sensor revolution, whereby the key issue is to dynamically integrate a CNN processor array with a sensor array on a single chip. Furthermore, several recent investigations show the importance of CNN in the derivation and implementation of new nonlinear information processing methods. Important problems are the realization of portable warning devices for epileptic seizures and the analysis of invasively recorded electrical brain activity which may lead to a better understanding of synchronization phenomena in the brain. Beginning on Monday 22 with the keynote address by Leon Chua, there are three days with two oral parallel tracks and additional poster sessions. There are nine plenary lectures and also a "Live Demo Session" showing the state of the art in analogic computing. While two sessions titled "Bionics and Biological Models" on Tuesday 23 show the results of recent investigations in this field with CNN, the relation of CNN technology to intelUgent sensors is considered in a panel discussion on Wednesday 24. This volume contains all 74 accepted papers and 9 invited contributions written by authors from 18 countries. The papers were selected in a strict review with three referees for each paper. This process guaranteed a consistently high quality of all contributions. The volume continues the tradition by covering the fundamental theory of CNN as well as applications in various fields of science and modem technology. I would like to express my appreciation and sincere thanks to the sponsoring organizations and to all members of the technical committee of IEEE CASS Cellular Neural Networks & Array Computing, together with all other referees for their important support in the review process. Finally, I would like to thank Mrs. Hätz, who was in charge of the Conference Secretariat task, and all individuals of the conference team for the invaluable job they have done.
