PREFACE The International Conference on Magnetic Alloys and Oxides, which took place at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, Haifa, Israel from August 15-18, 1977, was jointly sponsored by the European Physical Society and the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities. Financial support was given mainly by the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities, the Technion—Israel Institute of Technology, the Phys-ics Department of the Technion, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, the Weizmann Institute of Science, the Tel-Aviv University, Bar-Ilan University, the University of the Negev and by the Government of Israel. The Conference was attended by nearly 150 scientists from 15 coun-tries. The main topics dealt with at the Conference were: magnetic oxides; alloys incorporating dilute alloys; Invar-type alloys and amor-phous alloys; critical phenomena; hyperfine interactions; spin glasses; weak ferromagnetism; industrial applications; hard magnetic materials; metál—non-metal transitions and mixed valencies. To cover such a wide rangé of subjects, 17 invited lectures and more than 80 contributed papers were presented. The Conference brought together theoreticians and experimentalists working on magnetic alloys and oxides and included somé talks containing a current survey on manu-facturing applications. With the exception of the Opening Session, which took place on the morning of August 15, the lectures were given in two parallel sessions. There was alsó a Poster Session where all partici-pants who had asked to present their papers as such were given the opportunity. For the sake of scientiflc continuity, we have ordered the papers in the Proceedings according to their topicai classification. We gratefully acknowledge the help of the Scientiflc Program Com-mittee for their advice in selecting the invited speakers. In addition, we are grateful to the Chairmen for running the sessions. Special thanks are due to the international panel of referees for reviewing the papers. Finally, we gratefully acknowledge the excellent co-operation of all the authors, the editor A.J.
