PREFACE This volume continues the Proceedings of the congress by assembling abstracts of the communications presented on the theme: Guilt (or Pollution) and rites of Purification. These communications were given at section meetings during the afternoons of Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday (September 7, 8, and 10), according to the Program which is outlined in Volume I of the Proceedings. The abstracts are arranged here not in the order in which the communications were given nor by the sections of the Program, but according to a general outline of the history of religions that has been used for the Proceedings of previous congresses. Thus papers are grouped according to the historical contexts of their topics. The titles of all communications given at the congress are listed here as they appeared on the Program, and the abstracts are in the language chosen by the speaker. In a few cases, only the titles appear here, because no abstracts were available to the editors. Volume III will conclude the Proceedings of the congress. It will be devoted to the addresses presented at the evening sessions of the congress for discussion of : Historical scholarship as a factor in relations among religions today.
