INTRODUCTIONThis is the twenty-third issue of the Production Yearbook. It contains annual data on all important aspects of food and agriculture, including population, index numbers of agricultural and of food production, food supplies, prices, freight rates, and wages. The publication of the Yearbook has been made possible by the cooperation of governments which have supplied most of the information in the form of replies to FAO annual questionnaires. Collaboration with various agencies has continued in order to achieve conformity in the presentation of international figures. The assistance of these agencies is gratefully acknowledged.Continuous efforts have been made to enhance from year to year the utility of the Production Yearbook. In the present volume, the table on " Export Prices of Selected Agricultural Products," which was introduced last year, has been expanded to include more price series. The tables have been prepared partly by computers. Data on crops, livestock, and livestock products are shown for two five-year averages (1948-52 and 1952-56) and also for individual years from 1964 to 1968.Tables on food supply have been limited to those showing data from national balance sheets. Data from food consumption surveys will be published in due course in FAO's Review of food consumption surveys. As in the three preceding editions, this volume also includes a large number of estimates made by FAO on area and production of major crops and on livestock numbers and products, where no official or semiofficial figures were available from the countries themselves. The publication of these estimates gives the countries concerned a chance to examine them and it is hoped they will provide FAO with more appropriate figures than those given herein.Vll
