Preface This latest volume in the Progress in Neuropathology series is devoted to the presentation of new, diverse concepts and information in the broad field of neuropathology. The subject matter is not only restricted to morbid neuroanatomy. Somé contributions to this volume from the neurosciences do not always detail the morphologic changes in the neuromuscular system but, rather, provided insights into the mechanisms by which such lesions occurred. Considerations of space preclude inclusion of many important recent advances. Those that have been included deal with the dementias, experimentál allergic encephalomyelitis, cytoskeletal changes, and many aspects of neuroneoplasia. Among the latter are contributions that concern themselves with the role of microtubules in cellular proliferation, the genetic constitution of primary gliomas, the factors responsible for tumor invasion and metastasis, the viral induction of gliomas, and the growth of such tumors in tissue culture. Alsó presented herein is a reevaluation of the so-called neuron-specific enolase and a brief intriguing introduction to the subject of "brain transplantation." There is little doubt that this new field of research will develop rapidly in the immediate future. The final two contributions deal with muscle changes in the congenital myopathies and fatal catatonia. This volume will be of interest to neuropathologists and other pathologists, neuroscientists, neurologists, psychiatrists, and all those interested in nervous system structure and function. H. M.
