ForeworcThis book is a record of the proceedings of the second symposium on psittacosis held in New York City on February 16-17, 1956. Like the first symposium of 1953, this second symposium was carried out under the auspices of the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station, Rutgers University, and was made possible through the generosity of Mr. Gustav and Mr. Max Stern, and Mr. William Odenwald of the Hartz Mountain Products Company of New York.Dr. F. R. Beaudette, who arranged both symposiums, and who was the guiding spirit responsible for their ultimate success, died before he had completed the editing of the proceedings for this second volume, and before its foreword had been prepared. Because of this. Dr. Morris Pollard was asked to complete the task of editing and arranging the proceedings for publication, and I have been asked to write the foreword, which Dr. Beaudette would otherwise have ^vritten. I attempt my part of the assignment with a large feeling of inadequacy to do the job as Dr. Beaudette would have wanted it done. This second symposium on psittacosis constitutes a natural extension of the material reported 3 years earlier in the first volume. The matter of the diagnosis comes in for extensive consideration, as well as does the relatively new public health hazard posed by ornithosis infection in domestic fowl, especially the turkey. With the recognition and delineation of this new health hazard for man has come an increased interest in the possibility of controlling avian infections, both in psit-tacine birds and in domestic fowl, by the judicious use of the various broad-spectrum antibiotics. Several investigators report on the use of chlortetracycline in successfully treating avian infections. These findings, together with Federal control measures that have been promulgated, make it appear likely that progress is being made in handling the human health liazard presented by infected birds, and that the situation is not hopeless.
