INTRODUCTION Who is Pmi'ect English for? Project English is a beginners' course in Englisli for students in ttie 11-14 age group. The whole course takes learners from beginner to intermediate level. Each year provides a minimum of 100 hours teaching. Project English 2 is for lower intermediate learners. Why IS it called Project English? The material in Project English is based on project work. This works in two ways. First of all the stories and texts are organized into eight projects which develop a theme which will be of interest to young teenagers. Secondly, as your pupils work through these projects, they will build up similar projects of their own by doing a number of project tasks. These tasks give your pupils the opportunity to talk and write about the things which are important in their own lives. Thus Project English is a truly communicative course, because the language is always used to communicate about something. The pupils use the language they are learning to express their own ideas, feelings and interests. In Project English 1 the Siucfenf's Book is divided into eight projects presented by English-speaking children from Britain, America and Australia. Project English 2 puts the project concept into a magazine context. The Student's Book consists of eight issues of a magazine called 'Hot Dog'. The magazine is produced by four teenagers called Vicky, Phil, Kelly and Justin. Each issue of the magazine contains stories and texts on a particular theme. These include stories about the four teenagers themselves. In addition there is a regular cartoon feature with the two private detectives Hot Dog and Cool Cat. The various characters and their friends also appear in the exercises. Each issue of the magazine is divided into sections. Each section ends with a magazine task for your pupils. By doing these magazine tasks, your pupils build up a magazine of their own. What kind of language syllabus is Project English based on? Project English has two syllabuses: a structural syllabus and a functional syllabus. This reflects the view that appropriate language use requires a knowledge of both the form and the functions of a language. Through the three years of Project English the emphasis in language work varies so that the language syllabus is always the most appropriate to the pupils' needs. This means that in Years One and Two the emphasis is on the structural syllabus. Greater emphasis is given to the functional side of language in Year Three. What kind of methodology does Project English use? Project English takes the best of modern and traditional methods of teaching. Key features include: Variety. Variety is a necessary feature of all good teaching and teaching materials. It keeps the learners' minds active and holds their interest. In Project English you will find variety in a number of aspects: ? A variety of activities; individual work, pair-work and group work are all used. ? A variety of text types: dialogues, letters, tables, factual descriptions, labelled diagrams, maps, comic strips. ? A variety of topics. ? A variety of exercise types. 2 Problem-solving. Languages are learnt most effectively when we use them to solve problems. Problems make us think and we learn by thinking. There is a wide range of problem-solving tasks in Project English. 3 Cognitive treatment of grammar. The problem-solving approach is also applied to the learning of grammar. The pupils are not given rules or structures. They are helped to work out the rules and patterns for themselves. In this way pupils can lose their fear of grammar and see it as a logical system. But, of course, the ultimate aim is language USE. Pupils are given plenty of opportunities to use the language forms they have learnt. 4 Enjoyment. We leam a lot when we are enjoying ourselves. Fun is not just an added extra, it is the lifeblood of effective learning. Project English features a number of games, puzzles and jokes. 5 The Ego Factor. Nothing is more enjoyable than talking about ourselves. Through the magazine tasks pupils are given many opportunities to think and communicate about their own lives. 6 Graded activities. It is very frustrating to be given a task which you cannot do because you do not have the necessary language knowledge. Activities in Project English are carefully graded so that the learners always have enough of the language needed for the tasks. 7 Si
