IntroductionWelcome to Prospects Pre-Intermediate!The Student's Book consists of twenty-five four-page units, divided into five blocks of five. The fifth unit of each block is a review unit. The Pre-Intermediate level is designed for students in their first or second year of secondary school English, depending on the kind of school and English lessons they have already had.The first five units of the book are revision units. Students at this level should already be familiar with the grammar items in these units. However, just in case they aren't, there are presentation ideas, both in the Student's Book and here in the Teacher's Book.About this book The Teacher's Book has twenty-five corresponding units plus twenty photocopiable worksheets to accompany each main unit. It also contains the key to the Workbook. Each main unit contains the sections which follow. The aims of this unitThis section lists the structural and functional aims of the unit. There is also an indication of the featured lexical set.Grammar focusSpecific grammatical items are indicated. Pronunciation focusNon-review units have a pronunciation activity. Most of these activities focus on an individual sound, or compare two sounds which may cause difficulty. Most of the featured sounds are vowels or diphthongs.Words and expressions in this unitWords and expressions which occur in the unit are listed and where possible, they are grouped under a common heading. Words are listed wherever and whenever they occur, e.g. the word band (music group) appears in Units 1, 2 and 3 and then again in Unit 5 l/l/ord Power. If the same word could be a noun or a verb, the part of speech is indicated, e.g. drums (n). If the word occurs in a particular collocation in that unit, thecollocation is listed, e.g. work with (computers). If there is more than one possible meaning of a word, the meaning in the context is listed in brackets, e.g. join (= start working for a company). Words are sometimes listed with related words (e.g. opposites) that appear in the same unit, e.g. in Unit 13, friendly/unfriendly and formal/informal are listed togetherIn the first five units, a lot of vocabulary that your students probably already know is included in the list. We think it is fairer to see a known word in the list and ignore it than to suddenly find an unknown word in the middle of an activity!Words which only appear in the pronunciation section of a particular unit are listed separately. You will notice that the pronunciation section recycles a lot of words from earlier units. Words which only appear on the cassette are also listed separately. Students are not usually required to spell, say or otherwise activate these words unless they also appear on the page. There is also a section warning you of any complex rubrics (activity instructions) that you will find in the unit. We recommend that you translate these rubrics. The most common rubric instructions in the book are as follows (they are not highlighted at the beginning of each unit):Ask your partner Check (the meaning) CompareComplete Have a conversation Listen LookMake a list Predict Read Report (back) Say (what you know) Share (your information) TickUse WriteWords and expressions in the Language Check are listed in the Language Check notes. Words which appear in the Progress Check, and which have not appeared in the preceding four units, are listed in the Progress Check notes. Before you open the book When working with a coursebook, teachers look through the unit they are about to use and decide what will cause their students problems and what will be easy. They then make a note of all the words and structures that they will have to pre-teach and find a way to do it that will suit their own teaching style and the learning style of their students.Nothing can replace this special knowledge of a particular class that a teacher has.
