The aim of the "Investissements 85"Model is to study the evolution, until li.85, of the optimal structure of the French electricity generating equipments. This model is the most recent application of mathematical programming to the investment problem.
The use of linear programming was initiated by Mr. P. MASSE, in 1954. Then it developed into more complex models until 1961 when the "Modele des Trois Plans" has been achieved. But this model did not take into account such important points as plant localisation and shortage costs.
That is the reason why, through 1962 and 1963, some tests have been made into check the reliability of non-linear algorithms. They have shown the many advantages that can be expected from the use of these new methods, which have been developed for the last two years by the Operations Research Group of the Etudes Economiques Générales, and a team of mathematicians from the Direction des Etudes et Recherches, both in Electricité de "France (E.D.F.) . These studies resulted in the construction and resolution of the "investissements 85" Model.
