For clinicians in health care these are challenging times. The understanding of humán disease and therapeutic possibilities for its treatment are greater than ever in the history of mankind. Yet the external constraints imposed by managed care, cost containment, and regulatory procedures have increased the burden of health care delivery on clinicians and patients alike. At the same time, the clinician is faced with assimilating the unprecedented amount of new information that is emerging from biomedical research at an accelerating rate. No area is burgeoning faster than that of pharmacology and new drug discovery with the ascendance of molecular pharmacology, combinatorial chemistry, and high-throughput screening technologies. Indeed pharmacotherapeutics has become one of the primary if not the principal modality for medical intervention and by all indications shows every sign of continuing to do so. The fields of mentái illness and psychiatric treatment are certainly no exceptions to this trend. All the major pharmaceutical companies have large and active ongoing programs in central nervous system disease drug development that should lead to increasing numbers and types of new compounds for therapeutic application. So how are clinicians to cope with these growing demands on their time and attention? Well one way is through the use of timesaving informational resources, which make knowledge available to clinicians in an accurate and efficient manner. In essence, this was the rationale for the book Psychiatric Drugs. Our intention was to create a volume that was comprehensive, clear, concise, efficiently organized, and, most importantly, easy to use. Moreover, we wanted to make it accessible to all clinicians who might be using psychiatric drugs to treat medical and psychiatric illnesses. Consequently, we invited individuals who were leaders, but above all good educators, in the field of psychiatry and psychopharmacology to work with us to develop chapters that had a uniform and efficient formát and organization that made the information easily accessible.
