Defying political tensions, contacts among the nations of the world in the field of culture are becoming more and more intensive. Through the communication media (press, books, radio, television, film) the products of the intellect find their way to more people even in the more distant territories. Statistical surveys show that about 40,000 book-translations are made every year. However, only a minor part of these appear in the so-called "world languages" while a great number are printed in the languages of the so-called small nations.
Another permanent trend throughout the world is the increasing cooperation among publishers, ascribed to the intensification of international cultural exchange and the process of economic integration. Even in the field of music, intemational cooperation between pubUshers covering several countries is becoming a rule, since virtually no single firm is capable adequately to provide the entire world market.
In view of these developments, AKADÉMIAI KIADÓ—the Pubhshing House of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences—in joint edition with K. G. SAUR VERLAG, has decided to publish "THE PUBLISHER'S PRACTICAL DICTIONARY IN TWENTY LANGUAGES" with the object of promoting the efficiency of business contacts between the publishers of the countries (practically all the states of Europe, North and South America) united in the Berne Convention and the Universal Copyright Convention.
The First Edition (1974) appeared with German headwords; this was followed by an unchanged Second Edition (1977). In view of the success of the work it has been decided to publish the present first "English" edition intended for the Enghsh-speaking world. While retaining the basic structure, the book has been completely revised: new words and terms were added, and the stock of words has been updated and enriched by new synonyms which seem to abound in the Enghsh usage.
The dictionary includes 20 languages, each represented by 950 to 1,100 terms. Since this is a technical dictionary limited in its scope by its very nature, the most urgent and most difficult task was to compile a reasonable selection of the most important terms and expressions. A certain vocabulary of, and famiharity with the other language by the user is presupposed. The selection of the technical terms called for utmost care, especially since the number of technical terms in each of the individual fields, e.g. bookprinting, runs into thousands, not to mention the commercial language with its constantly changing terminology. The book and music publishing trade is also known as a particularly complex technical field.
Thus, it was decided to trace and cover the customary route of works through the phases of intemational publishing trade, from manuscript to bookseller (alas, even to the papermill ). Accordingly, the compilation contains a carefully balanced selection of the terms from all the successive stages such as: the most important hterary and musical genres; typical aspects of the publishing organization; publishing contracts (including the relevant legal and economic terminology); editing and redaction of the work; printing and production; main paper types; distribution, sales and agency; expedition; taxes and duties; joint editions; subpublishing; basic terms of copyright; publicity, etc.
