Preface
Since 1977, when the first edition of the Quick Reference to Cardiovascular Diseases was published, there have been considerable changes and development in the diagnostic as well as the therapeutic aspects in the field of cardiovascular diseases. Consequently, the book has been expanded significantly. Chapters on common noninvasive diagnostic tests including ambulatory (Holter monitor) electrocardiography, exercise (stress) ECG test, myocardial imaging, and echocardiography have been added. In addition, a chapter on His bundle electrocardiography is also included in the book because the test provides very important information in the diagnosis as well as treatment of various cardiac arrhythmias. Other new chapters include Risk Factors For Coronary Artery Disease, Exercise Prescription For Patients With Coronary Artery Disease And For Healthy Individuals, Sick Sinus Syndrome, Electrolyte Imbalances And Heart Function, and Coronary Bypass Surgery. It has been unequivocally demonstrated that the most common indication of permanent artificial pacemaker implantation today is for the treatment of sick sinus syndrome, whereas coronary bypass
surgery is the most common major surgery now performed in the United States. Proper exercise programs and physical activities are extremely important, especially for cardiac patients, because improper exercise prescription may be harmful to many cardiac patients and even to healthy persons.
The whole text has been revised considerably, although the fundamental aims and designs of the book are essentially the same. The unique feature of the book is its practical approach with a "cookbook style"—so that busy primary physicians and house officers may be able to use it as a quick reference source.
Many clinically pertinent illustrative electrocardiograms have been included along with new chapters dealing with various cardiac tests.
The secretarial and the editorial burdens have been carried out cheerfully by Miss Veronica Sevick, personal secretary to the author. Her able assistance and effort have been most valuable in the completion of the book. The endless cooperation of the staff of J. B. Lippincott Co.—particularly of Mr. Edward B. Hut-ton, Jr., President, and Ms. Lisa A. Biello, Editor—is greatly appreciated.
