INTRODUCTION This book is a collection of over 1000 quotations designed to be used by anyone who wants to make or write a speech. The quotations have been chosen for their aptness or wit or their relevance to a particular topic. The first part of the book has a short section of quotations about speeches and speech making. Then follows the main body of the quotations, arranged under a series of topic headings. These headings appear in alphabetical order. A list of the topics is given overleaf. Under each topic heading, the quotations are numbered and arranged in alphabetical order by the author's name. Two indexes appear at the end of the book to help the user. The first is based on the keyword or -words in a quotation. This index will be of use to anyone who can remember part of a quotation and wishes to locate it and check its source. The second index is a name index, useful for those seeking appropriate quotations by their favourite writers or speakers. Both indexes, direct the reader to the topic under which the quotation appears and to its number. Of course, people who make or write speeches should use their own words; it is, however, sometimes useful to have help. As Anatole France said, 'When a thing has been said and said well, have no scruple. Take it and copy it.'
