To Begin
This is a true story. It happened in Alaska, in 1925, to real people — and to real dogs. The places, names, and dates used in this story are accurate. And all the events described are based on real facts.
To make history come to life, the people in it must also come to life. The characters must speak and must feel. Since the events in this book took place many years ago, the author has sometimes had to use his imagination. He has had to "reconstruct" what some people said and thought. But in every case, he has tried to present what these people might have said and could have felt, as the tense, exciting days unfolded.
Much information for this story came from newspaper and magazine reports and interviews. The author wishes to thank Mr. Richard Brower and his staff at the Microfilm Room of the New York Public Library for making available a great many records of the newspapers and magazines of that period.
For added facts and background material, the author is indebted to the writings of Sally Carrighar, Peter Freu-chen, Kenneth A. Ungermann, Elizabeth Ricker, Ralph H. Barbour — and that master storyteller of the Far North, Jack London.
The author also wishes to thank Mr. Frederick A. Allis, of the Explorers' Club of New York City, for making their research library available, and for his kind help and cooperation.
