The year was 1936. In Germany, Adolf Hitler had risen to supreme power as head of the Nazi Party, and was arming his country for war. In Washington, D.C., the leaders of the United States watched uneasily as the shadow of Nazi imperialism feli over Europe. But even as the threat of global war grew every day, most Americans were thinking of their own personal difficulties, their own hopes and dreams. This was certainly true of Indiana Jones. Indy stood in a clearing deep in a South American jungle. His handsome face was streaked with grime and sweat under his háttered felt hat. His chin was covered with stubble. For days he and his two Peruvian guides had been struggling through the uncharted green maze of the tropical rain forest. But now, as he looked across the clearing he had come to, Indy forgot how tired he had been. He felt fresh and strong and eager.
