Guide to the Dictionary Random House Webster's English Learner's Dictionary is intended for learners of English as a second or foreign language. This dictionary covers the most common words and phrases in the English language. Spellings, usages, and pronunciations are based on American English. Definitions have been written in a clear and simple style that is easy for a beginner to understand. The Mam Entry The main entry (sometimes called the "headword") is printed to the left of the rest of the text in heavy black type. Main entries are listed in alphabetical order, regardless of whether they are single words, compounds of two or more words, abbreviations, prefixes, or suffixes. Different spellings or forms of the main entry are also printed in heavy black type. They are placed to show whether they apply to all definitions or only to particular meanings. A different form that applies to only one definition is placed after the definition number. These different forms are introduced by the words "or," "also," or "Also called." Single-word entries have centered dots to show where the word can be divided into syllables. This is a guide to where to add a hyphen (-) at the end of a line.
