EDITOR'S INTRODUCTION Third Edition Readings in General Sociology has long enjoyed a good reception. In two previous editions, it has been used by thousands of students in over 350 colleges since 1951. Its success may be ascribed mainly to the high quality of the image of sociology it projects. The second edition improved an already excellent book and the new third edition now makes it even better. The revision is substantial, emphasizing empirical studies with reference to theory. The articles themselves are less disturbed by cutting. More of the selections represent cultures other than the United States, lessening the danger of ethnocentrism and broadening the basis for generalization. Alsó, the introductions to the chapters are more extensive, with a view to giving the student more help. It may be safely predicted that the superior models of social research presented in this book will excite the student's imagination and that this book will continue to be regarded by teachers of generál sociology as a highly effective contribution to pedagogy.
