Preface This reader is intended in the main for advanced students of philological departments who study the English language and would like to know more about the geography of the USA. The chief aim of the book is to supply undergraduates with the necessary material on the United States geography as part of the syllabus on country studies. The book may alsó be of use to those who are making an independent study of English. In our attempt to give somé idea of the USA geography we thought it advisable to draw the material from various originál sources such as handbooks of geography, encyclopedias, newspapers, travel-notes and other publications. All the texts in the book came out in the USA and Great Britain in the last decade. The book consists of two parts: the first part deals with the generál geography of the USA; the second part provides a more detailed description of the fifty states of the Union- The different sections of the book are supplied with explanatory notes and there is a pronouncing dictionary of geographical names in the eíjd. The authors will be thankful to all those who wish to send their criticism and süggestions.
