Preface This symposium is devoted to a discussion about the birth of a new generation of antidepressant drugs, and in particular about the development of the first 5-HT selective uptake inhibitor, zimelidine. The role of biogenic amines in depression has been debated for more than a decade. It is now possible with the aid of such selective drugs to investigate the role of 5-HT in depression. This may lead to a better understanding of depressive illness and to improvements in the existing systems of classification. Irrespective of mechanisms of action, it is vitally important to test such drugs as antidepressants in terms of efficacy and side effects in comparison to conventional antidepressants of the tricyclic type. The results of clinical trials with the first of a new generation of 5-HT selective antidepressants would seem to fully justify the organization of this symposium under the title, "Recent Advances in the Treatment of Depression". The Editors would like to acknowledge the following members of the Editorial Office for their meticulous assistance in editing: Jerry Cott, Patricia Cott, Linda Brodin, Ann-Cathrine Elm (Editorial Secretary), Kenneth Hodson (Project Coordinatior), Desmond Lake-Bakaar and Jörgen Nörgárd.
