Preface The Red Cell Manual is written for students, house officers, and physicians as a concise guide to the diagnosis and management of red cell disorders. It stresses a pathophysiological approach to diagnosis using commonly available laboratory tests. Basic concepts of erythron function are presented in the first part of the manual, followed by a discussion of the use of the laboratory in detecting and analyzing an anémia. The remainder of the manual is dedicated to a discussion of the functional approach to diagnosis and basic concepts of management. The manual is designed to provide an introduction to the area of red cell disease. For more extensive discussions of individual conditions, the student is referred to the literature citations and standard textbooks of hematology. We wish to thank the many colleagues who have contributed over the years to the concepts presented in this manual. In the preparation of the seventh edition, special thanks must go to Arlene Shatz for her secretarial help, and to Dr. James R. McArthur and John Bolles of the University of Washington Educational Resources Center for the art work and the color photographs selected from the National Slide Bank of the American Society of Hematology.
