PREFACET he purpose of this book is to provide material at O-level in French for the revision of essential constructions, for translation from and into the language and for free composi-tion. It provides wide cover for the basic requirements of the various Examination Boards in England, incorporating somé passages set by them at previous examinations.Chapter I is a brief grammatical survey of the chief difficulties which are continual stumbling blocks to the student. It is not intended to be in any way exhaustive. The emphasis is on specific points of grammar and idiom which are fundamental to a sound use of the language. These points are explained as simply as posfible and underlined by direct method exercises where useful. Then follow in Chapters II and III English sentences and passages for translation into French with model translations and notes emphasizing the points explained earlier in Chapter I.Chapter IV is self-explanatory.Chapter V consists of twelve stories told in picture form with vocabulary aids. These stories are intended for practice in free composition either oral or written. A further list of subjects for free composition is alsó provided.The twenty-five stories in Chapter VI have been specially chosen for their liveliness and humour. They could be used for aurai comprehension or, with the help of questions in French and the vocabulary outlines, for oral or written reproduction exercises.February 1965S. W. P. H. T.
