TREASURE OF THE EGLISE SAINT-REMI. KING LOTHAJR
PREFACE
A HISTORICAL GALLO-ROMAN TOWN
Rheims can pride herself as much as, if not move than, other towns
in France on her long history. The town owes its name in all prob-
ability to the ancient Gallic tribe of the Rerni who settled long before the
Christian era in the plain near the marshes of La Vesle. However,
the Remi did not begin to play their pcirt in history until the time of the
conquest of the Gauls by Julius Caesar to whom they surrendered in-
stantly. As a result the city of Durocort enjoyed an ever-increasing
prosperity and developed rapidly.
The triumphal arch built in the 3rd century still bears witness to
the greatness of this Gallo-Roman city, and so do the archeological
finds discovered at various times beneath the town : pottery, bronzes,
sculptures and, especially, mosaics.
