AUTHOR'S PREFACE
Although I have worked as a professional wildlife and nature photographer for over six years, I have not had any formal training in this field. I believe this is the case with most amateur wildlife photographers. Most people who photograph animals and plants are nature lovers with a strong desire to capture the beauty and wonder of nature on film.
I remember how many years it took before I started producing consistently good photographs. My learning curve was very slow and frustrating as I struggled to improve my often disappointing results. Like many other people I spent a lot of money on equipment, travel and film, but neglected to study much about photography and technique! 1 had made the mistake of thinking that good equipment and photo opportunities would automatically produce good photographs. This, of course, is not the case.
1 believe that by learning and applying a number of simple, basic rules, you can improve your results greatly. Photography is more accessible and easier than ever before as high-quality equipment and film have simplified the picture-taking process. Despite this, photography is a creative process that depends more on skill, knowledge and inspiration than on high-tech equipment. Catching that special moment on film is achieved primarily by being out there in the field and applying the correct technique.
This book is intended for both the serious amateur and the beginner who has at least a rudimentary understanding of how cameras work. It is based on my own experience and I have included practical tips and field-proven advice on how to take better wildlife photographs. It covers the basic equipment required, photographic technique, advice on how to apply it in the field, and tips on development and storage.
Hopefully this book will enhance the pleasure you derive from photography and help you to take pictures with greater confidence. Wildlife photography is a very rewarding hobby; one that allows you to learn new things all the time and improve your skills. Go out there and enjoy it!
