PREFACE TO THE FOURTH EDITION I am grateful for the reception accorded the first three editions of this book. I am glad to have the opportunity offered by a new edition to revise the text thoroughly and include many of the advances made in roentgeno-graphic technique. Every page has been examined carefully and, where indicated, changes have been made. Considerable new material has been included, many of the illustrations have been changed, and fourteen addi-tional illustrations have been provided. The aim and the generál plan of the book have not been changed. The technical procedures are based on the thickness and radiographic density of parts of the humán body. Emphasis is placed on a method of developing a roentgenographic technique by experimentál exposures and by ch arting the results of actual diagnostic exposures. In this way, a technique can be developed in the laboratory and with the equipment with which it is to be used. Somé of the technical procedures that require expensive accessory apparatus or highly trained medical assistants, such as kymography, body-section roentgenography, cardiography, and cerebral angiography, have been omitted. The needs of .r-ray technicians, of medical students and residents in classes in roentgenology, and of those physicians doing somé roentgenographic work for themselves and their colleagues have been particularly kept in mind. I am grateful to Mr. II. J. Mackin and his associates in the Dick X-Ray Companv for many valuable suggestions. I want to thank the Sisters of St. Vincent's Infirmary for piacing the facilities of the institution at mv disposal. I am particularly grateful to mv associates for help in the experimentál work and the illustrations, and to my secretary, Mrs. Norma Gaston, for her unflagging zeal in seeing the manuscript through its many changes.
