The Gem Roget's Thesaurus is a tool for finding specific words or phrases for general ideas. When you want a more accurate or effective way of saying what you mean, it gives you possibilities and allows you to choose the one you think is best. The book has a text of about 130,000 words and phrases, arranged in categories by their meanings, and a comprehensive index.
The search for a word that you need begins with the index. Suppose that you want a word to describe something odd.

The words closest in meaning are grouped in clusters separated by semicolons; the Semicolon indicates a slight change in sense or application. To help in choosing the right word, terms with restricted uses are indicated by italic labels in brackets, such as nonformal (meaning slang or informal), old, or Scots.
The Thesaurus offers invaluable help in all contexts that call for good Enghsh, and, particularly when used in conjunction with one of the Collins range of dictionaries, will actively promote a broader command of the language.
