This guide book is designed both for those who intend to spend their holidays in Romania and for those who do not intend to do so. This is not a paradox. It is to be hoped that this book will help the former to plan their trips, visits, and even their rest, more efficiently, while, where the latter are concerned, thai after reading this book they will include Romania in their plans for future holidays. The present guide book has been worked out to cover holidays lasting one, three, seven or len days. In the following sections you will find tentative tours that can be effected during each specific period of time. The ten-day visit is described first, as it is the most comprehensive, then the seven and three-day visíts, with the one-day visit coming last. These tours specify the main stages of the itinerary, the distance between various places - by road as weil as by rail - the duration of the air trip (if there is one) and suggestions as to the number of days which should be devoted to specific places or areas. This survey is followed by a detailed description of each tour, including the main localities, the distance between them, natural beauty spots, etc. Each specific place of tourist interest is only described once, on its appearance in the first itinerary in which it is included. The same sections alsó provide information with regard to hotels, restaurants, shops and other useful tips. It should be emphasized that the tours set out in this guide are only tentative and that they can be adapted to suit your interests, tastes, hobbies or just your holiday mood; many points on the proposed itineraries are interchangeable, depending on time and distance. More often than not the description of each itinerary includes more objectives than can normally be visited within the specified period of time. It is for you to choose. Romania ... a country with an area of 237,500 square kilometres, situated in south-eastern Europe, about half-way between the Equator and the North Pole and alsó half-way between the Urals and the Atlantic Ocean, i.e. between the extreme eastern and western of the continent or, to be more specific, between 43°37,07" - 48°15'06" latitude North and 20° 15'44" -29° 41'24" longitude East. Its 3153 km-long bordér line separates it in the East and North from the Soviet Union, and in
