PREFACE
This textbook is one of a series of aids to Russian studies, which also includes a recorded supplement, a book of grammar and lexical exercises, an oral speech manual, a reader and a vocabulary.
It is intended for adult beginners studying Russian with a teacher and Is designed for a one-year course involving 2-3 hours of Russian a week.
Its main purpose is to enable the student to converse on everyday and cultural subjects, to read moderately simple texts with a dictionary and to continue studying Russian independently afterwards.
The book is based on the Programme of Russian for Foreigners compiled by the Scientific and Methodological Centre of the Russian Language.
The vocabulary comprises 1000 words, 200 of which are international words, such as ymeepcumem, KyAb-mypa, etc.
In writing the textbook, the authors did not have in view students of any particular nationality; in selecting and arranging the material they proceeded from the most typical features of Russian which prove difficult for most foreigners — whatever their nationality — to grasp.
The book consists of 40 main lessons and 8 grammar revision lessons. It contains no grammatical explanations in the student's native language.
Grammar is presented by means of patterns —model sentences. These patterns, which are invariably complete sentences, may be: (1) unexpended or (?) extended simple sentences or (3) compound or complex sentences.
Colloquial phrases are Introduced as lexical units and are not analysed grammatically.
The grammar contained In the textbook will provide the student with a useful foundation for his subsequent study of Russian. The revision lessons and the grammatical tables at the end of the book will help the teacher and the students In their work.
The authors have gone out of their way lo present the grammar and the vocabulary In as simple and graphic a manner as possible; for this purpose many of the grammatical and lexical points are explained by means of drawings or charts, all grammatical points are thoroughly explained.
Every lesson consists of two parts, one grammatical and the other lexical: each part Is printed on two adjacent pages.
On the left-hand page at the beginning of a lesson, is a frame containing model sentences, which Include all the points of grammar dealt with in the lesson. Then the new grammar and vocabulary are Introduced by means of drawings and charts. At the bottom of the page, under a separating line, comes a word-list, in which new words are arranged in the order In which they appear In the lesson. Each new word occurring for the first time is printed In bold-face type. The right-hand page contains grammar exercises related to the new material. These are followed by a reading text.
The next two pages contain a number of dialogues based on the grammar and vocabulary of the new material (left-hand page), and exercises In spoken Russian (right-hand page).
The texts will acquaint the student with cultural and day-to-day aspects of Soviet life and Russian traditions and customs.
