Finding Your Way to the Wonders-Large and Small
On the pages that follow there are descriptive essays, color photographs and, in most cases, informative drawings to help you appreciate and enjoy 50 of the most scenic natural wonders in America.
These major wonders are indicated on a map at the end of each essay; and, as revealed on these maps, each wonder is surrounded by many other places of exceptional interest. Each map, in fact, shows some 20 other scenic places within a day's drive of the major wonder—for a total of more than 1000 beauty spots in all, including some from every state in the nation.
These area maps, prepared specially for this book, have unique features to make them more interesting and useful. These features are indicated by the following symbols. ? The main scenic wonder is outlined in red, and its name is lettered in red. If the area is small it is simply marked with an open red square, as shown here; if it is a large area, the red outline encloses the entire shape. ¦ Other places of outstanding scenic interest are marked with a solid red square, with the names alongside in capital letters. These places are described in alphabetical order immediately following the map, and some are illustrated in color photographs as well, m This symbol indicates the location of a museum or other permanent exhibit that will help you better understand and enjoy the scenery and natural life of the area. At the end of each feature, the museums are listed alphabetically under the name of their nearest town or national park.
Campgrounds are indicated by this tent symbol and an accompanying number. The number identifies the campground in a Campground Directory beginning on page 529. Look in the Contents to find the page numbers for each section of the directory. There is a list of campgrounds for each of the major wonders, and the information here includes the campground name, season, size, utilities provided, and special amenities such as swimming, boating, horseback riding and so on. "3*- Airports that offer regular commercial service are designated by the airplane symbol. This is to help those who may want to fly to a chosen area and rent a car on the spot.
The small brown square on the miniature map of the United States shows the general location of the region covered by each map. On the opening page of each feature the wonder is located on an outline of its state.
Exceptionally scenic roads are marked in green: solid green if they are U.S. or state highways, in green dashed lines if they are un-paved roads, and with green borders if they are part of the Interstate system.
National Forest land is marked in light green, and national parks, monuments and seashores in darker green.
Turn the page to see how the entire United States is covered by the 50 area maps. The name of each scenic wonder appears in red, and its location is marked with a symbol: ¦The page number on which each area map appears is indicated by the number in the lower-right-hand corner of each square.
