Foreword
The Mauritshuis, after 160 years of faithful service as the guardian of the Royal Picture Gallery, is now in need of rejuvenation. The 17th-century building is being restored to its full glory by the Ministry of Cultural Affaire, Recreation and Social Welfare and by the Directorate of Government Buildings. The cellare, too, are being adepted to the demands of modern museum management. The restoration will be completed in 1985, but in the meantime the paintings have had to be moved. One part of the collection is now touring the world, but a second part has found a temporary home in the Johan de Witthuis. We are delighted that visitors can continue to admire the paintings in a setting which does them justice.
This guidebook has been compiled by Nicolette Sluijter-SeijfFert, the head of the Mauritshuis Education Department. It not only describes the paintings on display, but also traces the history of the collection and of the Johan de Witthuis itself.
Many regard the Mauritshuis as the perfect museum, and we trust that this selection of its paintings will continue to delight visitors in the former residence of Johan de Witt, the 17th-century Dutch statesman who was described by Sir William Temple, the English ambassador to The Hague at the time, as 'a perfect Dutchman'.
