A Message from the Authorrobably the most profound thing that any student ever said to me was, "I don't care about this book because l'm not in it. If you can show me in here-in this book-l'll care." Writing Scholastic Economics gave me the opportunity to do something that I have believed needed to be done for years-write a high school economics text from the point of view of high school students. I wanted to base a text on their real world of economic concerns. In this way, economics becomes more than principles to be learned for a test. Scholastic Economics is a narrative based on the economic dilemmas faced by a dozen students at Central High School. I use the continuing story of these students as the framework for teaching economic principles and, more importantly, economic decision making. Your students will be able to identify the characters of this text with real people and real situations. They will see them using economic concepts as a way of thinking about and acting on economic dilemmas-on the personal, school, community, national, and international levels. I strongly believe that through the modeling of these characters, your students will learn to recognize and use the same applications of concepts in their own lives. The most important idea I want you to remember about Scholastic Economics is that the program doesn't just teli your students about economic principles. It invites them to use these principles as a basis for thinking and acting in their own roles as consumers, employees, employers, savers, investors, and citizens. Unlike my former student, your students will be able to find themselves in this program. fay Bonstingl
