In fact, generál school occupies eight years in the life of a child^/The ex-ceptions are those who leave school earlier, or fali sick, etc./ It is these two spheres, or média, where the young generations acquire the basis of their education and recelve an impetus for the rest of their life.The young generation devote a considerable amount of time to television already in their childhood years. Adults devote a major proportion of their leisure time that r nains after work and before sleep to the television screen. This statement is not intended to infer any qualification. It does not intent to assess whether this is a tlessing or a curse: it does not attempt to qualify television viewing as being a more useful pastime than, say, reading, or any other cultural, or sports activity. It sirply states the fact that a *new" institution has emerged side by side with the school, which occupies an even more substantial amount of time in the lives of the people, than school and - like school - it extends to practically the whole society.*How and why could it happen that after a re latively short period of 20 years has elapsed, television viewing in Hungary occupies such a major part of cur life?
